Ever heard the old saying “image is everything” ?
Red Hat by Chatpeaux
In the fabulous world of circus, costuming plays almost as large of a role as the actual performance itself, so this time-tested statement is more true now than ever before. Judging the suitability and the appropriateness of any given costume is a fine balancing act (no pun intended). An ideal costume needs to be comfortable, warm and fitted/tailored to the artist’s body. Excellent costuming can be the difference between good act execution and GREAT act execution, so outfit selection is a key component to success.
Recently A2D2 enlisted the help of local Toronto artisan Sarah Blostein, owner of Chatpeaux http://www.chatpeaux.com/ for help with costuming for an outdoor show held in November. Our primary concern was to keep our artistsĀ warm from a safety and a functionality stand point. Our team found the decorative hats from Chatpeaux both functional AND beautiful ~but most of all WARM! I encourage you to speak to Sarah about your knitwear/costuming needs should you have any outdoor performances coming up. Her attention to detail, quality of work and level of customer service is unmatched.

A fantastic pairing if I do say so myself! I hope photos were taken
Julie, you are so wonderful! Thank you for the mention!
Here is a brief of history of the designer and her involvement with the dance-theatre-circus world!
I have over 10 years of ballet training (NBS and Interplay), as well as years of lyrical jazz and modern dance in high school and university.
I spent six years studying theatre production at York University, focusing on costuming and props design and creation.
I have also taken various circus courses from Mainspace circus school!
All of my work is highly theatrical while remaining functional. My history as a movement artist has helped me better understand the requirements of costuming for performers and how best to bring their design ideas to life!
