Ladies and Gentleman I give you the best vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Toronto: Calico Cafe

Located at 1226 Bloor Street West, this restaurant totally blew my socks off and I`ll tell you why.

The reason I went to dine in the first place is because my good friend and fellow entrepreneur Krystal Speck of Krystal Speck Ceramics told me about a restaurant that she and her partner Jared opened last summer.

After looking up the website and reading the restaurant philosophy is to provide “healthy, sustainable, and delicious food“ I was sold. It was just a matter of finding the time to get over there.

So finally, after months of meaning to go, I visited Calico for the first time this week with my husband to give it a try. Suffice to say, we sampled everything on the menu and all of our plates went back licked clean. Ha! How`s that for a review?

The menu is all about quality not quantity (just like circus arts!)

I`ve listed the winter dinner menu, but the selections change seasonally, so best to check the website for the most up-to-date information on brunches, lunches and dinners.

Two Apps:

Including – (1) Zucchini boxes with walnut-scallion pate, baby red romaine salad and cilantro-balsamic dressing  AND (2) Sauteed honey mushrooms with rapini and ginger-shoyu sauce

Two Mains:

Including – (1) Smoked tempeh with brussels sprouts and raisin ragout,   AND (2) Agnolotti trio: spinach, beet and carrot

Two Desserts:

Including – (1) Caremelized bananas and chocolate mousse with maple-cashew cookies, AND (2) Vanilla cake with orange-ginger icing

PLUS

Fresh squeezed juices, homemade specialty drinks (like the oh-so fabulous coconut hot chocolate – to die for!) Nik and I were highly impressed when chef Jared explained that his coffee is sourced from fair trade organic coffee suppliers – fantastic!

The food is light and refreshing (you feel great after you leave) instead of heavy and stuffed! Perfect for performance artists and more generally for folks who are health conscious with their dietary choices.

For planners, I would highly recommend chef Jared`s creations for any catering needs. I should also mention that Calico can accommodate small parties when booked in advance.
