On the topic of insecurity…
I can’t think of a more detrimental mentality, really.
Our insecurities, but more importantly, our INABILITY to face those insecurities have the potential to destroy or block out critical relationships.
Why, you ask?
The less secure you are with yourself, as in: your abilities as a performer, your capabilities as a negotiator, your skills as an entrepreneur etc, the MORE likely you are to make a critical error because of your insecurity.
These errors always occur when interacting with people who you PERCEIVE as a threat (either consciously or subconsciously).
In my opinion, this is a very dangerous self-imposed predicament.
Think about it.
Take for example a “class” scenario. You are in a workshop with several fellow artists experimenting with new maneuvers and challenging choreographic sequences. You look to your right and there is a performer who is more fit, and is demonstrating exemplary comprehension and execution of the new movements.
Is your immediate reaction to A) Feel inspired and motivated by your classmate, engage them in conversation and ask for assistance? or B) Feel intimidated and defeated and move to the back of the dance class?
The former, offers you an opportunity to improve yourself and to interact with a fellow performer while developing a relationship (either short-term or long), whereas the latter is a self pitying, isolated disaster which offers you nothing but more insecurity and inward focus.
I think what we need to do get over ourselves! It’s tough, but necessary.
In my experience, us folks in the circus industry are the worst offenders, so let’s work together to change this.
Generally art and artistic endeavors work like this: The more you give the more your receive in return. So open up, share and let go of the insecurities which are holding you back. And if you feel like turning back just remember to G-O-Y!
Get-Over-Yourself.
