Bon Voyage!
Going on tour with your cirque act or show can be an exciting endeavor.
Before you book – be sure to read through my list below consisting of action items in order to ensure that your circus tour is tops.
Julie’s Top Ten Touring Tactics
1) Define Your Terms Before You Hit the Road
Compensation and expenses need to be discussed up front. Will your client: [1] Pay your performance fee [2] Pay out per diems [3] Take care of transportation -to host city and transportation during your say in host city [4] Provide a payment schedule -so that you know exactly when you will be getting paid [5] Provide full accommodations for duration of your stay in host city.
Also, be sure that all of the points in your performance rider are covered. Then, lock in your deal with a fully executed contract and deposit.
2) Dealing with Agents -Do your Homework!
There are some truly outstanding entertainment agencies which have years of experience in booking talent on tours. Your job is to seek out those professionals and only deal with them. Unfortunately there are troves of sketchy agents out there who are only to willing to take advantage of your services. Be sure to research the agency you will be working for before you make any final decisions.
3) Meticulously Manage your Itinerary
You must do this before you head out. This work should be done jointly with your client or agent so that your know exactly when you are required for tech rehearsals, set up and show times.
4) Befriend the Techies
These are the are the people that will make or break your performance. Do not treat the tech guys with disrespect or disregard. Instead, befriend them, get to know them and acknowledge their work after each and every show. This is very important!
5) Act Like a Pro!
This means no temper tantrums diva moments or blow ups at any point during your tour. You never know who could be listening in or making note of your behavior. Ask yourself “do I want to work with this company (client or agent) ever again?” If the answer is “yes” then watch what you say and be a pro! Behave in a professional manner at all times -this is also the difference between an amateur and a seasoned pro!
6) Train to Perfection
Be sure to keep up your training and stay fit while touring. Part of our job is to be in top physical form, so visit that hotel gym and work out whenever you can.
7) Create Contacts, Network and Make Friends
Get out of your hotel room and socialize. It is important to make connections with your fellow tour mates. Everyone who is with you on tour is there for a reason, so find out their strengths and make friends with everyone on the team.
If You Have Time, Try to Explore Your Host City
The provision here is “if” you have the time…You are on-site to do your job first and foremost and then if there is spare time try to explore your surroundings, taste the local cuisine and chat with the locals.
9) Manage Your Documents
All to often important paperwork like passports are lost or stolen. Be sure to photocopy your documents and put them in a separate place in your luggage in case you need to visit an embassy while you’re away. Prevent loosing your paperwork at all costs as it will save you many headaches later on.
10) Enjoy!
You’ve worked very hard to arrange your tour contract so try to enjoy every moment. Being paid to perform and travel is a wonderful opportunity ~so try to have a blast!
